I have a really cool story that may be a helpful resource for any young graduates looking for work. I graduated from SDSU back in the earlier part of this millennium, around 2001. At that point, I had spent the majority of my young life getting an education. Most people that went to school for 7 years, ended up with a master’s or Ph.D. degree. Not me. But I am proud to say that I did get my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, and was ready to begin my career.
I previously worked at Del Taco, Staples, and The Auto Trader. Now armed with a degree, I was looking for something that matched my skills with an exciting opportunity. Like most people, finding a job became a challenge. I started looking around in the classified section of the newspapers, using Monster online, and going to some of the local temp agencies, but they all seemed to have listings of jobs that didn’t even exist. After months of getting the “run-around” from companies posting bogus job ads, and doing silly gigs through temp agencies, I decided to go back to SDSU to see if they could assist me finding an real job. They pointed me to the Career Center.
After attending a Career Services workshop, I decided to check out the Job Board to see if there was anything of interest. I called a few of the listings, used some of the techniques from the workshop, and got an interview! The listing posted was for employment for a Material Handling company. Until that moment, I had never even heard of material handling, but was intrigued by the post, and willing to give it a chance. I would soon realize that the material industry had endless potential and would inspire me. Here I am 9 years later, and I am now the President of the company.
